Monday mural
I took this photo in the small town of Cahersiveen in County Kerry, Ireland. Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty was an Irish Catholic priest and a significant figure in the Catholic resistance to Nazism. In Rome during World War II, he organized an escape organization for Allied POW's and civilians and by the end of the war, he and his colleagues had saved more than 6,500 lives. He earned the nickname "Pimpernel of the Vatican" because he became a master of disguise in order to evade capture by the Germans when it was necessary for him to leave the Vatican to carry out his rescue missions. You can read more about him here.

Just fascinating! Once again, I learned something new. I like the mural, and am supposing the flowers are for him, kind of like a memorial...He sure deserved all the medals he got.
Saw the 1983 movie about him called "The Scarlet and the Black",
Hello, there should be more people like Monsignor O'Flaherty. Great mural and photo!
...resistance is still important.
at first look I thought this was in Florida and thought what?? then I read it.. I am hoping we will not need a man like him here in the USA soon
I had never heard this story before!
Good to learn about another hero fighting oppression.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew it was in Ireland. Will have to check that movie out.
What an interesting and inspiring story.
Him I hadn't heard about, but I've heard of other stories of priests taking an active role in the Resistance movements during the war.
Very interesting and informative. Glad you are back and your leg has healed and that you DID make it to Ireland. Wonderful

He is a real hero! Wonderful mural and interesting story.
A very inspirational man who did good, a wonderful story.
I had never heard of him, so it was interesting to read about his feats.
Great mural and thanks for participating Lois.
Glad to see you're back! (I also took a bit of a break.) It's nice to see you went to Ireland and I look forward to seeing what you have to share.
He was a lovely man according to his biography Lois ✨
Many thanks for the mural, and the link …
All the best Jan
