Galway Cathedral
Galway Cathedral is Europe's most recently built great stone cathedral and is dedicated to Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas. It was begun in 1958 and completed in 1965. It was built on the site of an old jail and was quite controversial at the time, but it did put a lot of Irish to work and even drew the attention of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who visited the cathedral in June 1963. His visit helped to promote the building and generate funding from Catholics in America. He was assassinated just five months later in November 1963 and it was decided that the cathedral would honor him with a mosaic in one of the alcoves depicting President Kennedy praying. The mosaic is one of the first things American visitors to the cathedral ask to see. The floors of the cathedral are made from locally sourced Connemara marble. We visited the Connemara marble factory the next day and I will show photos of that visit in a later post.
Linking to Thankful Thursday because I am so thankful to have been able to enjoy this wonderful trip through Ireland with my daughter, especially after breaking my leg three months earlier and not being sure whether we would be able to go or not.

I have chill bumps now. Scrolling from one gorgeous photo to another, simply stunning, and I love the story about President Kennedy. Your second picture, with the ceiling and hints of green is gorgeous. And the blue brick skylight is simply stunning, with angels flying around it. The floor is sublime. After the pews, is this a red flame? Totally splendid!!!
...there are so many gorgeous details.
this is my favorite set of photos. that building is amazing and so beautiful. I love, love, love the window over the entrance, both inside and outside views.... It looks hundreds of years old, and is not. Wow
Uma bela Catedral gosto da sua decoração que é muito simples.
Um abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.

Hello, it is a beautiful cathedral. The interior is lovely. Happy Thursday, enjoy your day!
Beautiful stone building for a church. Beautiful designs in the interior and I like the pews.
Thanks so much for capturing all the wonderful details of this cathedral. Craftsmanship is my thing, and the love that comes through all these little (and big) portions, colorful, designed well, just beautiful! So glad you were able to take this trip!
It is magnificent!
Oh my what a beautiful place. Love the colors and grandeur.

Yours photos are stunning. The inside of this church is wonderful.
Beautiful details here Lois, it's a lovely cathedral. So much fun to travel with your daughter, Aimee and I did Egypt and Europe together, I enjoyed it so much, lots of happy memories.
P.s. I'll find Burt Reynolds for you next time Lois. I must admit I did love Tom Selleck but was put off by his NRA association.
Oh my, a beautiful cathedral and your photos are very special. A very interesting history along with its connection to President Kennedy. Thanks for sharing this trip Lois. So glad to hear you were able to go on it considering the fact that you broke your poor leg not that long before. Do hope it is healing well.
What a beautiful building that is, Lois!
A gorgeous building! So glad you got to see it, Lois
Magnificent!

A lovely Cathedral, I enjoyed all of your photographs.
All the best Jan
Catching up ...so fun to see these elegant pictures of the beautiful and well known cathedral, next to a post about your climb (brave lady that you are) up to that view and then the later post about the cute animals at the craft fair...... I usually don’t like to get so far behind reading but it is kind of worthwhile today because it really makes me appreciate your trip... all the different aspects...you really got to learn about the country.
