After leaving Kraków, we drove south through the Polish countryside and just before we crossed the border into Slovakia, we stopped in the small village of Orawka to visit this beautiful church. The Church of St. John the Baptist is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Polish region of Upper Orava. It was built in 1651-1656. There are three late Baroque altars and a pulpit and organs dating from the 17/18th century. The walls and ceiling are covered with original polychrome paintings also dating from the 17th and 18th century depicting scenes from John the Baptist's life, several saints and the 10 Commandments. The church cemetery surrounds it in the front. There was some sort of festival going on behind the church while we were there and I bought some hand-made candy for my grandkids from the gentleman you see in the last photo.

hi there Lois, glad to hear you are ok and the storm wasn't so bad for you. It was a bad bad Irma, wasn't it? I love these pictures!! Very interesting and lots of color and love the details, and you explaining what it all is---not having been there, I wouldn't have known. Isn't that candy SO BRIGHT AND COLORFUL AND GORGEOUS as well as it probably tasted good!!? LOL

Superb photos, Lois! Great lighting and color. And what a church! Not only significant in terms of age, but in terms of ornamentation. Rather much but I'm sure that everything in it has some historical significance. Is that a TV up on the wall on the right in the first shot?
