December Theme Day: Transitions
I'm pretty sure this is a Cicada in the process of molting or shedding its exoskeleton. It was perched on the side of a curb in the parking lot of the library and I took these pictures at the end of last summer. It appears to be about halfway out as you can see the old brown exoskeleton at the bottom and the green head emerging at the top. The whole process takes several hours and I think it is fascinating, even though the insect is a bit ugly. Cicadas make a lovely singing sound in the trees at night. Go to this link to watch a video of a cicada molting.
The first day of the month is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community and this month's theme is Transitions. To see other participants' interpretation of the theme, you can visit the CDP Theme Day gallery here.

Interesting little characters. I never heard of them but read the link you provided. Nice post for the monthly theme.
What a great photo Lois, very well noticed.
Excelente trabalho e belas fotografias, gostei bastante.
Um abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.
Andarilhar
great choice lois! when we moved to missouri that was the first time i'd ever heard of a cicada and the noise they make...it was a constant buzz all summer long, got to where you didn't even notice it anymore!
Whoa...you get first prize. What a super post for the theme! We have these things here and they can get noisy! And they are ugly as sin. Great job, Lois!
excellent shots of this guy.. look at those striped eyeballs. as for the singing in the trees, it drives me nuts.. they are really loud.. I have not seen one losing the shell, have seen them live and the left behind shell, but not like this
Don't you wish people could do that? Somewhere between 55 and 60 we could just shed that skin that's starting to sag and wrinkle get and whole new fresh look.
These are wonderful captures, Lois!
It looks so alien!
Gosh that really is transition Lois. I do like Sharon's idea 😀
I'm with Sharon on this one! This is a brilliant choice for the theme, Lois!
Kind of Star Wars like, don't you think, Lois? :-)
Good choice for the theme!
