Tuesday's Treasures
Perhaps the most treasured building in Tallahassee is Florida's historic old state Capitol, which has been standing on this same site since 1845. The building went through many changes through the years until that 22 story high rise you see behind it, now known as the "new" Capitol, was built almost 40 years ago. Unfortunately it is impossible to get a good shot of one without the other. Believe it or not, when the new Capitol was being built, the original plan was to demolish the old one. There was a huge protest over that, so lawmakers decided to restore the old Capitol to its 1902 appearance, including those red and white striped awnings on the windows which are authentic to the period.

I remember I have visited this building, I recognize the red white awnings. I was nice looking around inside.
Hello, the capitol building is pretty. I like the red/white awnings. Happy Tuesday, enjoy your day!
Very grand. Love the new behind the old signifying progress without forgetting.
It's the awnings that call me. So distinctive and attractive. And they make it a unique building.
So glad they didn't destroy that lovely old building!
when i saw the awnings i thought why would they put those on a historic building. did not know red striped awnings were done that far back in time... our downtown Old Main has green striped awnings and i did not know the awnings are historic.
This made me smile because we have the same problem here with our state capitol. There is a new and very plain high-rise building right behind it and trying to photograph the actual capitol building without that building in it is almost impossible.
The first image is a great mixture of the old and the new. It's great to find National Register of Historical Places plaques. That awning sure captured my attention, it most help cool a hot day. Thanks Lois for coming to this weeks party, the welcome mat is always out.
An interesting building with some really eye-catching awnings!
A real treasure, Lois.
I do prefer the old Capitol building to the new one!
It's beautiful (unlike that new one). I loooooove the second shot and all those windows!
I love the awnings!
Far more attractive than the building behind.
It's good to hear restoration rather than demolition. We had a beautiful old courthouse in our county, but it was torn down in the 1970s and replaced with a horrid gray Soviet style building. :-((

This sure is a beautiful place. It is so funny, beautiful isn't the exact word...but I don't know what else to say. It is just so fine.
