SkyWatch Friday

One of the chimneys of the manor house at Dorothy Oven Park. Can you tell I was standing under a palm tree trying to stay cool? We have already had some pretty hot temperatures and it's not even June yet.

My blog is going on a break for the next week because I will be visiting with family and attending my youngest nephew's high school graduation. Be back soon!

Good Fences

While walking along one of the trails at Dorothy Oven Park last weekend, I spotted this fence through the bushes.

I got a little closer to the fence, but this was all I could see.

I continued my walk and about a half hour later, I came up on it from a different angle. That fence was surrounding this cute little wooden water tower! At one time, it must have serviced the manor house located in the park. I showed a picture of the house on my blog a few years ago here.

Here is a closeup of the top of the water tower. It's funny, I've been visiting this park for years and we even held my daughter's wedding reception in the manor house 14 years ago, but I never noticed the water tower until now.

I've seen this sign posted on this tree in the front yard of this house for years.

Our World Tuesday

I wish this beautiful daylily was in my yard, but it's not. I found it while I was walking around Dorothy B. Oven Park over the weekend.

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, the day we honor all of the courageous men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives fighting for and defending our country. Most of us will be having cookouts, going to the beach or just relaxing on a day off from work, but I think it is important that while we are enjoying these activities, we stop and remember why we are able to do so.

SkyWatch Friday

Blue skies and puffy clouds over the Kearney Center, Tallahassee's new facility for comprehensive emergency services. It replaces the city's old homeless shelter which was located downtown and provides a much needed new approach in how the city's homeless receive care. You can read more information about this new facility here.

Good Fences

I'm not sure what that contraption is on the edge of Lake Ella, but there is a fence down there in the water around it. I guess it keeps fish or other critters from getting to close. Linking to Good Fences.

Our World Tuesday

I saw these nine baby ducks huddled together near a clump of Spanish moss while I was walking near Lake Ella. Don't worry, mama duck wasn't too far away.

A Little Prop

I'm not sure what was going on here, but apparently either one or both of these trees needed to be stabilized at some point. I hope the tree on the left isn't depending on the tree on the right, because I think it has seen better days.

Long Haul

I've never seen big rigs being hauled like this before. They were parked in a store parking lot not far from I-10.

Jim and Milt's Bar-B-Q has been is business in Tallahassee since 1968 when it was opened by two fellows named, you guessed it, Jim and Milt. The original owners sold it in 1979, but it has remained pretty much the same through the years. I first started going there when I was a student at FSU over 40 years ago. It is located right down the road from Doak Campbell Stadium.

Two Gals

This little place opened not too long ago and every time I pass it, I think about stopping and going in. Unfortunately, the one day I stopped it was closed. From the looks of their Facebook page, they have some interesting stuff.

Happy Mother's Day

This was the last of the amaryllis blooms in my front yard flower bed for this year. I took this picture one morning a couple of weeks ago. I hope all you Mothers out there have a wonderful day!

Weekend Reflections

I almost didn't post this picture because of the sun's glare off the windshield of that car behind the tree, but then I thought "why not?", since Saturday morning is the perfect time for hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Ooops….signs, signs

I didn't realize I was trespassing until I walked up to get a picture of this sign. As you can probably tell, I blurred out the pertinent information that would incriminate me. I was never there. Not me.

Our World Tuesday

We had some glorious weather that past weekend, so on Sunday I decided to pick up some lunch and head to Cascades Park. This little Red-winged Blackbird was under one of the picnic tables snacking on a french fry, but when I sat down, he flew up into one of the nearby palm trees and watched me eat my lunch. When he flew, the red color on his wings was much more noticeable. He also did a bit of singing while he was sitting in the tree. Once I was done, I walked away and he flew down under the table again to finish his own lunch. I might have left a few pieces of bread behind for him, as well as some lettuce from my sandwich.

Monday Mural

Hosted by the Florida State University Department of Art Education and designed by Art Therapy graduate students, this mural was completed in February and is another one of Tallahassee's community mural projects. I have featured other community mural projects previously on my blog here and here. Basically anyone is invited to join in on the fun and the results are usually wonderful. This one is entitled "I AM Gaines Street" and is located on the side of an old building on (you probably guessed it) Gaines Street near downtown. To read more about this particular community mural, please visit this page.

Nice Ride

I spotted this beauty sitting in front of the First Presbyterian Church downtown while a wedding was going on inside. The driver told me it was a 1962 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II. He didn't offer to take me for a ride unfortunately. I guess the bride and groom would have gotten a little upset if they had come out of the church and their car was gone.

Eye on the Prize

Last weekend I attended the Miss Majorette of Florida Competition in Orlando because my granddaughter, who is 6 years old, was a participant. There were quite a few trophies up for grabs and I'm proud to say she came home with one of them, as well as a couple of medals and a ribbon!

May Theme Day: Revolution

I took this picture of an antique fan in the master bedroom of the main house at the Goodwood Estate, which began in the 1830's as a cotton and corn plantation and has since been restored to what it looked like in the early 20th century. I'm not sure if the fan still works, but I'm sure those blades made quite a few revolutions back in the days when there was no air conditioning in our hot and humid Tallahassee summers! You can read more about the history of the Goodwood Estate here.

As always, the first day of the month is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo Community. Go take a look at other CDP bloggers' interpretations of this month's theme here.
