I have inherited several of my family's Bibles and this one is the oldest and largest (14 x 10 inches and 5 inches thick). John Biglow was my great great grandfather born in 1808 in Weathersfield, Vermont. In between the Old and New Testament are pages where marriages, births and deaths have been recorded through the years. Some have become faded through time, so a few years ago, I transcribed all of them so they would not be lost. Some births date back to the late 1700's. There are numerous newspaper clippings to be found between the pages and also mementos such as the marriage certificate of a couple of my great grandparents dated June 23, 1897.
Note: You might be wondering how my great great grandfather could have been born so long ago. The reason is that his son, my great grandfather, had two families. He married his first wife at a young age and they had several children. His first wife died when he was in his fifties and their children were grown. He then remarried a much younger woman (my great grandmother) and had 3 more children. One of those children was my grandfather, who was born in 1900. So even though I'm an old retired lady now, I'm not that ancient!

Oh, Lois. How wondful to be the custodian of something like this: the accumualted stats of one strand of your ancestors. To be able to see their actual hand would be such a thrill. I do hope you have the next custodian all picked out and ready to take the Bible into the future. Thank you for this superb contribution to our Theme Day.

Lois, what a treasured and storied collection you have. I wonder if future generations will be family historians as well. Certainly your family will carry on with the record keeping, adding to the collection.

Aging normally has such negative connotations in this day and age, but this is amazing! What a treasure you have in this bible and all the clippings and mementos in it. I love historical family things like these and enjoy seeing the pictures.

what a lovely inheritance
a great treasure you have here. my grandmother on my dads side was born in was born in 1886 and his dad in 1883, daddy in 1913 and me in 1944. Dadddy grandfather faught in the civil war and died at Shiloh, i grew up on civil war stories.

What a treasure. Have you considered scanning part or all of it ? It's a lot of work but I have done it with some of my valued documents.
Wow -- that's awesome! It's amazing it has been handed down intact through so many generations. I just love that it was used to memorialize significant family milestones. Very cool. I hope your children are interested in safeguarding it down the road.

Interesting to hear about your family history. Although I'm only 20, one of my grandfathers (now deceased) was born in 1911. The story is similar to that of your great grandfather: two families. What was unusual though was that 2 of the children in the second family were named after 2 of the children in the first family!
