April Theme Day: My Camera-Shy Self Portrait

That's me in the pink shirt reflected in the glass door. Obviously this picture was not taken in Tallahassee, but on a gorgeous sunny day in Paris last summer when I visited the Eiffel Tower on my vacation with my daughter.

The first day of the month is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community. Click here to see interpretations of the theme from other CDP members.

Note: I will be taking a break from my blog for bit while I enjoy a visit from my grandkids. I also need to replenish my supply of blog pictures. See you soon!

Good Fences

I hope whoever left this leaning on the fence near the Lake Jackson boat landing remembered to come back for it.

Monday Mural

There is a brand new mural on the old city waterworks cistern and it looks great! I previously posted about the historic waterworks here and here. To read an interesting article about how this mural came to be, visit this link.

Weekend Reflections

I think this potential customer was having trouble reaching the door handle, but I wasn't going to let him in.

SkyWatch Friday

The sky was looking very pretty after I finished having lunch at one of my new favorite places to eat last Saturday. Chicken Salad Chick not only has a catchy name, but the food is delicious!

P.S. Happy 5th wedding anniversary to my wonderful son and daughter-in-law today! They are spending the day at the beach with my little grandson, who is usually with me on the weekdays while they work. It's beautiful, warm and sunny today, so they should have a great time!

Good Fences

The azaleas are in bloom now and they look so pretty peeking over this wall next to the driveway of a friend's house.

WATW and signs, signs

In this little strip mall, you can pull your motorcycle in, have your nails done, take out a loan and go to biker church all in one trip! I'm adding a link to the church here after reading the first comment this morning.

Weekend Reflections

Great Egret stalking his dinner at the edge of Lake Esther. I was standing on the boardwalk that runs next the the lake when I took this picture late in the afternoon on a cloudy day, so it almost appears to be in black and white.

Good Fences

This old wall has been standing for as long as I can remember and has definitely seen better days. It surrounds a huge piece of property with an old house behind it, but I think it will soon be coming down because the land is being developed into a 175 acre public park with nature trails, restroom facilities, a baseball field and other amenities. I can't wait, because it is very close to where I live and my grandkids are going to love it. Work has already begun and it is fun to watch how it is progressing.

Swamp

My neighborhood backs up to some railroad tracks and just on the other side of those tracks is this swampy area or what we sometimes like to refer to as "wetlands". There are some small sinkholes nearby too, but they are on private property so I wasn't able to get a picture. As you can see, the trees haven't gotten their leaves back yet. This area is why the mosquito control truck drives through my neighborhood on a regular basis during warmer weather.

Doing a little fishing

The weather was beautiful this past weekend and I took this picture on Sunday at one of the boat landings at Lake Jackson just north of Tallahassee and not far from my house.

Monday Mural

Another bird from the giant mural I first posted about here. I'm not sure what kind of bird this is supposed to be. What do you think?

Weekend Reflections

Reflections in the window of an office building in downtown Tallahassee. That tree doesn't have any leaves yet, but it does still have Spanish moss hanging from its branches. That building is the Florida Capitol, which is across the street.

SkyWatch Friday

We had some warm sunny weather this week, but now we are back to rainy and chilly. I'm hoping this is our last cold snap.

Big Spools

I guess they aren't too worried about someone taking them since they are located outside of the fence.

Spring might be on the way

Flowers brightening up the median on a cloudy afternoon in front of the Tallahassee City Hall downtown. This picture was taken on a Sunday, which is why it looks deserted.

Side door

Just so you don't wander into the Florida Capitol building by mistake, this rather bland side entrance is labeled for you. You can see what the 22 story building above this door looks like by going to one of my posts from last week here.

Monday Mural

Here is the second closeup from the giant mural I showed last week. Unfortunately, there is a small tag near the tail feathers of this beautiful snowy egret. I guess it could be worse, but it is still disappointing. In case you missed the first post, you can see it here.

March Theme Day: Ageing

I have inherited several of my family's Bibles and this one is the oldest and largest (14 x 10 inches and 5 inches thick). John Biglow was my great great grandfather born in 1808 in Weathersfield, Vermont. In between the Old and New Testament are pages where marriages, births and deaths have been recorded through the years. Some have become faded through time, so a few years ago, I transcribed all of them so they would not be lost. Some births date back to the late 1700's. There are numerous newspaper clippings to be found between the pages and also mementos such as the marriage certificate of a couple of my great grandparents dated June 23, 1897.

Note: You might be wondering how my great great grandfather could have been born so long ago. The reason is that his son, my great grandfather, had two families. He married his first wife at a young age and they had several children. His first wife died when he was in his fifties and their children were grown. He then remarried a much younger woman (my great grandmother) and had 3 more children. One of those children was my grandfather, who was born in 1900. So even though I'm an old retired lady now, I'm not that ancient!

The first day of the month is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo Community and this month's theme is Ageing. Please visit this link to see how other CDP bloggers have interpreted this theme.
