Photos from Florida's Capital City (and occasionally a few from other interesting places I have been fortunate enough to visit in my travels!)

French Pastry
It is not quite the same as what I got used to in Paris, but pretty close. I bought some macarons, which were delicious. Next time I might try their creme brûlée or one of the many other delicious treats they offer, which you can see on their website here.

Pink Panther
I was on my way into the grocery store when I noticed this beauty parked right out front. The name on the helmet says "Pink Panther" which I assume might have something to do with the rider on the back seat.

Florida's Finest
I'm pretty sure I have posted a picture of this sculpture before, but I liked the angle on this shot. It is located in the park in front of the Governor's Mansion and is dedicated to the children of Florida. The sculptor is W. Stanley Proctor.

Rubbish Tuesday
I spotted this little antique Tonka fire truck toy sitting on the counter at Firehouse Subs. It certainly looked right at home there. Linking with Rubbish Tuesday.

The Grove
The Call-Collins House stands right next door to the Florida Governor's Mansion on a piece of property known as The Grove. Built in the early 1830's by Richard Keith Call, who had been appointed as territorial governor of Florida in 1836 by President Andrew Jackson, the house has a long and rich history in Tallahassee. It even served as a temporary Governor's Mansion for a few years while LeRoy Collins was Governor of Florida in the 1950's because the old Governor's Mansion was in such disrepair that it had to be torn down and rebuilt. LeRoy Collins was married to Call's great granddaughter, Mary Call. A complete restoration and historic rehabilitation of this beautiful antebellum property by the Florida Department of State is currently in the final stages and you can read more about its fascinating history here.

Florida Governor's Mansion
This is a picture of the front of the Florida Governor's Mansion. It is quite big and not possible to get a clear picture of the whole thing because of the trees and walls surrounding it. Neither of the two candidates running for the chance to occupy this house for the next four years appeals to me, so I guess it really will be a case of voting for the lesser of two evils.

SkyWatch Friday
As you can see from all the green in this picture, fall has not really started showing up here yet. This lamp post is located in front of the Florida Governor's Mansion. I'll show a picture of that this weekend. The sky seems a little bluer though. Linking to SkyWatch Friday.

Courthouse
This is the Gadsden County Courthouse which is located in Quincy, a small town just west of Tallahassee. The Confederate war memorial I showed you here on Tuesday sits right behind this courthouse.

signs, signs
This is where you would go if you hit it big in the Florida Lottery. Since I never buy lottery tickets, I would have about as much of a chance of winning as I would taking a trip to the moon up there over the building. Linking to signs, signs.

Rubbish Tuesday
Not exactly rubbish, but these graves in Old City Cemetery downtown are over a hundred years old. Linking to Rubbish Tuesday.

War Memorial
In the south, it is not unusual to find memorials dedicated to Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. This one is located in the small town of Quincy, just west of Tallahassee. It sits behind the county courthouse.

They paved paradise….
And put up a parking lot, as Joni Mitchell once sang. or in this case a shopping center and parking lot. This huge 9 acre lot has been shaded by tall pine trees for as long as I can remember. This is what it looked like yesterday. Several years ago I posted a picture of the trees here. I guess you can't fight progress.

Weekend Reflections
Another photo taken at Lake Ella. There are several of what I like to call "turtle barges" floating in the lake and this one happens to have sprouted a bush. You might have to click to enlarge the picture so you can see that a couple of turtles are taking advantage of the nice weather to sun themselves on the barge. Linking to Weekend Reflections.

SkyWatch Friday
Since it is too hot to walk outside, not to mention the mosquitoes, I like to walk around the mall for exercise. Here is one of the skylights. I can't wait for some fall weather, so I can enjoy the fresh air. Linking to SkyWatch Friday.

signs, signs
After I saw this sign, the song got stuck in my head. The small print on this sign is a reminder that aggressive driving is dangerous and citations will be issued. Linking with signs, signs.

Sidewalk Advertisement
I thought this was an interesting way to advertise. Just stencil your web address on a sidewalk that is popular with daily walkers and their curiosity will probably get the best of them, just like it did with me. This happens to be a popular downtown restaurant located close to the Florida capitol building.

Weekend Reflections
This picture was taken in the small town of Quincy, which is just west of Tallahassee. In the window of this shop, which apparently carries quite a variety of items, you can see the reflection of the sign I posted on Wednesday here. Linking with Weekend Reflections.

SkyWatch Friday
I must admit that I have posted pictures from time to time that were not taken in Tallahassee, but this one was taken farther away than any I have ever posted before. This handsome fellow posing for me is one of the ravens residing at the Tower of London and I took this picture earlier this summer. Bird lover that I am, I spent more time sitting on a bench watching the ravens than I did looking at the Crown Jewels, especially since they wouldn't let you take pictures of the jewels. Legend has it that six ravens must guard the Tower at all times, or the monarchy will fall. To learn more about these pampered birds, visit here. It also happened to be a warm sunny day in London, so the sky was looking pretty good too. Linking to SkyWatch Friday.

signs, signs
I have to admit this sign is not located in Tallahassee, but in Quincy, which is a small town just to the west of here. It is located on the side of the building housing Padgett's Jewelry Store and you can read a little more about their history here. Linking up with signs, signs.

Rubbish Tuesday
These people decided to get creative with their old run-down satellite dish instead of just taking it down. It was facing a busy highway, so I was lucky I didn't get run over trying to take this picture! Linking with Rubbish Tuesday.

September City Daily Photo Theme Day: Rust and Ruins
The Old City Waterworks is a historic site located near downtown Tallahassee. Built in 1904, it was the city's first public utility facility. Until the turn of the last century, water had been obtained from area springs. This proved hazardous for health reasons and also for fighting fires in the city. The waterworks were remodeled in the 1920's and 1930's, but closed in 1980, after being added to the US National Register of Historic Places on January 31, 1979. In 2007, it was restored with funding assistance from the Florida Department of State. As you can see from these pictures, the area could probably use a little sprucing up.
My little blog break lasted much longer than I had planned, but I'm back today with a Theme Day post. I hope to start posting regularly again if I can get out and get some new pictures. I have been hampered with an injured knee after I sustained two nasty falls while on my vacation in England and France earlier this summer. The knee is finally feeling better and I am actually able to walk without my cane now, even if I am a bit slow! To see other City Daily Photo bloggers' take on this month's theme, please visit HERE.
