Western World

Here are two more shots from my guest photographer, my son, taken in downtown Bonifay, a small town just west of Tallahassee. I'm not sure about the barber pole, but the flag is there because it was Memorial Day weekend. Linking with signs, signs.

Columns

This is another picture taken by my son when we were in Bonifay over the weekend. This old house sits right on the main street through town and I was attracted to it because of the columns, which I just love. I like the two chimneys on each side too. The house was probably occupied by a family at one time, but now it is owned by the church next door and is used for church functions.

Rusty

I took a break from blogging over the long weekend and spent some time visiting with family who live in the small town of Bonifay, which is just west of Tallahassee. They live out in the country and on the way to their house, we saw this old rusted out Ford automobile sitting in the front yard of someone's house. On the way back I pulled over to the side of the highway and handed my camera to my son. He took this picture, so that makes him my guest photographer today! Linking up with Rubbish Tuesday.

Memorial Day Weekend Reflections

Reflections in one of the marble walls of the Florida Viet Nam Veterans Memorial across the street from the Capitol. If you look closely, you can see the names of veterans from Florida who were killed during this conflict engraved in the marble. I previously posted a picture of this memorial here. Scoot

Yesterday I posted a picture of a cute little car. Today I'm showing a cute little scooter. I love the color on this one, but you won't catch me riding one.

Smart

This little beauty was parked in front of a restaurant and I took a picture as we were going in. Have you ever driven one?

SkyWatch Friday

I took this picture last fall when the Goodyear blimp passed directly over my head as I was going into the grocery store. It was a Saturday afternoon and the blimp was in town for a Florida State University football game that was being televised later that night. The blimp provides those panoramic shots over the stadium you see when you watch a game on TV and it usually arrives a day or two beforehand and flies around town, especially if the weather is nice. It's always fun to see, but I think this was first time I had ever seen it this close before. Click on the picture to enlarge it and you will get a better look at the pilot's cabin and the American flag on the bottom of the blimp. Linking with SkyWatch Friday.

Outdoor Amphitheater

The new outdoor amphitheater located in Cascades Park near downtown. The tall building behind the trees in the background is the Florida Capitol. If you enlarge the picture, you will see the dome of the historic old Florida Capitol building just to the right of it. The old Capitol has been restored to its 1902 appearance and serves as a museum. I have previously posted pictures of both buildings here.

Listen to the Mockingbird

This little bird was standing on this sign singing his heart out when I was parking my car, so I just had to get a picture even if it was through the wind shield. The mockingbird is Florida's state bird. Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday.

Drive Safely

This sign was placed here as part of the Florida Department of Transportation Memorial Marker Program to commemorate someone who has died as a result of a vehicle related accident on a state highway. Requests for these markers are usually made by a member of the deceased person's family or could even be made by a friend with the family's permission. The signs are provided free of charge. More information about this program can be found here. Linking with signs, signs.

Weekend Reflections

Reflections of Monroe Street in downtown Tallahassee on a rainy day are seen in the office doors of the Florida Association of Counties. There are quite a few lobbyist groups here with offices located within walking distance of the Capitol. Linking with Weekend Reflections.

Kudzu

It doesn't take long for the kudzu to make a comeback as soon as the weather gets warm. Kudzu is that bright green vine you can see climbing up to the right of the sign in this picture. Pretty soon it will take over and cover everything it touches. If you don't know what kudzu is, you can find out more about this invasive plant here. By the way, I never would have expected to find a conservation area behind a Target store, which is where I took this shot.

Old Library Building

The David S. Walker Library is located on Park Avenue downtown and was named for the founder of the first library in Tallahassee. Walker also served as the eighth Governor of the state of Florida (1865-1868). The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and is now the home of Springtime Tallahassee, a civic organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the city's history. The organization also hosts an annual event celebrating the arrival of spring with a huge parade through downtown and many other fun activities. Springtime members raised the funds necessary to restore the building.

Downtown Park on a Rainy Day

The chain of parks downtown are not usually this deserted, especially when the weather is nice. There are seven parks in this chain located along Park Avenue which runs through the heart of the city.
