I wonder about the origin of "stump speech." Is it because pols used to stand on tree stumps speechifying, or is it because a stump speech is an abbreviated version of a longer speech? In any case, like you, if I saw a politician giving a stump speech I'd skedaddle too. :)
So there would have been a good reason then Lois? We're having a few issues with trees in Perth just now, in the big new development there are some trees that seem to be in the way, but I think there will be a huge to do if anyone tries to have them removed!
Up north there have been so many extended power outages because of severe storms that people are starting to be more accepting of removing big, old trees that are damaged or rotting.
...the only thing that makes a tree a hazard is a potential target...sadly as an arborist we remove many urban trees...often after the fact (storm damage)...if people truly realized how much their activities around tree root systems have weakened them structurally they'd all be freaked out and moving houses...but in our world of insurance we often have to make those financial choices...or simply the value of a human life...and in Tallahassee we do a great job of tree debit and credit replacements and maintaining a safer urban setting for these trees to reside in, compared to other municipalities around the State...so don't be sad...

That's a really cool stump. It is the same in our town. They've even designated historical trees!
