Old City Cemetery is the oldest public cemetery in Tallahassee. It was established in 1829 and is located near downtown and right across the street from where I work. It contains graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers, victims of the yellow fever epidemic of 1841, and some notable figures in Tallahassee history. I recently took a walk around the cemetery and this week I will be showing a few pictures from that day.

I see the Spanish moss which amazed me when I visited your town. Had never seen it before.
I look forward to the rest of this series. Old cemeteries are sobering places, and the headstones and monuments can be works of art.

Lots of good tombs there... lots of history. I used to take my ENC1101 kids there and have them do a mock interview with a person of their choice.

In Europe, cemeteries have a role almost like art galleries. Less so in the US, but with some conspicuous exceptions (like Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass., and the cemetery in Savannah). I will look forward to seeing what you turn up in Tallahassee.
I do like tramping around in old old cemeteries. There a quite a few tiny ones out this way. Not as historic as the one you posted though.

We are fortunate in that some of the old, deadly diseases are less of a threat, like yellow fever.
A peaceful place for a quite stroll beneath moss ladened oak trees. What a history this cemetery must hold.

Another cemetery shot for today! Reminds me to visit one or two before the snow flies. There is always so much to ponder when walking around, reading the headstones. Too bad about the vandalism. Wonder what motivates some people?!
