The Leon County Courthouse in downtown Tallahassee. Originally part of Escambia and later Gadsden counties, Leon county was created by the territorial legislature in 1824. It was named for Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer who discovered and named Florida in 1513. Tallahassee, the county seat, has been the state capital since 1824.
