Magnolia Blossom

I couldn't resist taking a picture of this magnolia blossom in the late afternoon sun. Just a few minutes after I took the picture, the light was gone. Happy 3rd birthday today to my darling granddaughter! This flower is almost as pretty as she is.

Camera Critters

My grandkids are I were wading in the warm shallow water at the edge of Apalachee Bay in the Gulf of Mexico and saw this slow moving snail. My grandson is a big fan of Spongebob Squarepants and decided to name him Gary, in honor Spongebob's pet snail on that cartoon show. Weekend Reflections

This great egret was fishing for his lunch at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge when we visited last weekend. We watched him swallow several small fish, but he was too quick for my camera! My grandson counted 28 of these beautiful birds during our visit. To see more wonderful reflections from around the world, visit Weekend Reflections.

Tallahassee/St. Marks Historic Railroad Trail

The Tallahassee/St. Marks Historic Railroad Trail runs all the way from Tallahassee to the small village of St. Marks on Florida's Gulf coast. In the early 1900’s, the trail was used to carry cotton by rail from the plantation belt to the coast for shipment to textile mills in England and New England. Today it is a paved trail for bikers, walkers and skaters and there is even an adjacent unpaved trail for horseback riding. I took this picture at the Main Trailhead just south of Tallahassee. This section of the trail is currently being resurfaced and should be finished sometime this summer. I'm following Clytie's suggestion in her comment and linking this post to a wonderful meme called Signs, Signs.

Tallahassee's Rock Station

My favorite radio station was doing a live remote broadcast the other day and I just had to take a picture of their truck.

My Grandmother

The first picture is of a painting done by Ponte Vedra artist Ellen Jones from the old photograph in the second picture. The lady in the picture is my grandmother (also named Lois) and she posed for this picture back in 1924 on her 18th birthday. No one in our family had even seen this photo of her until it was featured on the cover of a 2000 calendar by the local newspaper. The photograph was found in the archives of the Beaches Museum and History Center in Jacksonville Beach, which is where I grew up. The artist did a series of paintings based on historic photographs of the area and they were featured in an exhibit at the museum earlier this year. When I saw the painting of my grandmother, I just had to buy it and now it is hanging on the wall in my living room. My grandmother passed away in 1996.

Three Sisters

This sculpture is entitled "Three Sisters". It was dedicated by members of the Chi Omega sorority in recognition and celebration of 100 years on the FSU campus. This sculpture is sitting under those tall pine trees I posted a picture of yesterday.

Watery Wednesday

This guy was throwing his cast net out near one of the boat landings at Lake Jackson. It brought back childhood memories of my grandfather throwing his cast net into the surf at the beach where I grew up. He always came out of the water with a net full of fresh mullet which we would take home and fry for supper. To see more wonderful watery pictures, visit Watery Wednesday.

Baby Wrens

These four baby wrens are sitting in their nest waiting for their mama to come feed them. The nest is located in the folded up camp chair (shown in the second picture) which is sitting on my son and daughter-in-law's back porch. While I was taking their picture, mama bird was fluttering around waiting for me to get out of the way so she could bring them some tasty treats. If you look closely at the baby in the bottom of the picture, you will see a little heart shaped mouth!

Players Club at Sawgrass

There was a little golf tournament called The Players Championship going on this weekend in Ponte Vedra Beach which is just south of Jacksonville. I happened to be over there to visit a friend on Saturday and I didn't realize the traffic nightmare I was getting into just trying to get to her house! I haven't seen that many ticket scalpers on the side of the road since the last big FSU football rivalry game in Tallahassee. I took this picture for Jacob over at Ocala Florida Fotos. It was as close as I got to the actual golf course.

Camera Critters

While walking around Lake Esther, I noticed this kid had picked up a turtle. He held it out so I could get a picture and I don't think the turtle was too happy about it! To see more cute critters from around the world, don't miss Camera Critters.

Watching

When you are walking along and you see a lizard, you just have to stop and watch it for awhile. Who knows what it might do? I always enjoy seeing the world through the eyes of my grandchildren. If you click on this picture twice and really supersize it, you will see the lizard they are watching. It is sitting between their cute little heads on the other side of the railing just on the edge of the wooden walkway. It looks to me like it is watching them as closely and they are watching it!

Mother's Day Brunch

My son and daughter-in-law took me out for Mother's Day brunch at the Mockingbird Cafe and it was wonderful! We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather and some really fabulous food. That's me and my handsome son in the first shot. I also got to meet May, who works at the Mockingbird and is the daughter of one of my favorite local bloggers, Ms. Moon at Bless Our Hearts. That's me with May in the second shot. She also has her own wonderful blog and you can find it here.

Camera Critters and Happy Mother's Day!

When I was a kid, we always called these little dragonflies mosquito hawks. They also come in green, but I'm a little partial to the blue ones. To see more fascinating critters from all over the place, visit Camera Critters.

Mail Delivery

This is something I saw quite a bit when I was growing up, but not so much anymore. This mailman was making his deliveries on foot in a neighborhood close to downtown Tallahassee.

Florida Trust

The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation advocates for legislation and funding in support of historic preservation on behalf of Florida´s many historic sites, museums and parks. They are located in the Hays-Hood House which is now called the Florida Trust House, a Queen Anne home built in 1910 and located on Park Avenue in the Magnolia Heights National Register District of Tallahassee. I think the prettiest feature of this house is the turret with its beautiful dome and finial. To see additional pictures of this lovely house and read more about the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, visit their website here.

Graduation Day

College graduates and their families wait in line to take pictures in front of the Westcott Building fountain at the main gate of the Florida State University campus this past weekend. It is a huge tradition to have your picture taken here in your cap and gown and it brings back wonderful memories for me of my own graduation and that of both of my grown children. Look closely and you will see a girl posing in front of the fountain in her cap and gown.

Theme Day -- Mailbox

After having problems for years with neighborhood kids vandalizing my mailbox and stealing my mail, I finally gave up and got a post office box. I kind of like it now. My mail is safe and I can throw away all the junk mail I receive before I leave the post office. The first day of the month is Theme Day for the City Daily Photo community.
