Ghost Bike

I have been noticing this bicycle parked on this corner for months and the other day I decided it deserved to be showcased on my blog. After posting this picture today, one of my local blogger friends has explained why it is here. Please see the comment below by downtown guy. What a sad reminder! There is also a website about Ghost Bikes here. Thanks Hank.

Oh dear, it's more than likely a memorial...so, sad.

It must be art, as it is painted and decorated with the flowers. Don't think anybody is taking a ride. A nice picture.

What's up with those white tires? Curious.

Interesting, to say the least.

Was someone in an bicycle accident there? Or maybe it's just an artistic display? Very pretty flowers :-)

That's a ghost bike. You can see them all around town. They are put up by the local cyclists when someone is hit and killed while riding their bike. It's not strictly a Tallahassee thing, either - you see them in many cities. It's both a memorial and a way of reminding drivers to slow down, be careful, and share the road.

I agree with Darla. I think this is a memorial to someone who probably had a bicycle accident on this corner. It is very pretty though! And I'm surprised no one has tried to lift it.

That is sad. I hadn't seen any in Tulsa so far, or likely I haven't noticed them.

Very sad. Glad you posted this nice shot of the ghost bike to remind us all to keep alert while driving.
I just remembered that I was enjoying North-East Florida last year this time. Greetings from Tash

I'm glad for Downtown Guy's comment as I've seen these bikes in other cities, too. It is sad, but we can hope a helpful reminder to safely share the road with bicyclists.

Re your comment on Cedar Key: The church is quite traditional, but very beautiful. You would like it a lot.

But this is still a good idea to call attention to the tragedy ....

I don't think we have those here - though people often put flowers where there has been an accident. How sad. Cyclists are unfortunately very vulnerable.

We have several roadside memorials but I've never seen a 'ghost bike' before.
