Happy Thanksgiving!

These succulent little critters will be on my Thanksgiving table today in the form of oyster dressing to go along with the turkey and all of the other goodies. I don't think I have ever had a Thanksgiving meal that did not include fresh Florida oysters. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Old Barn

 

I finally found a barn I could photograph so I could participate in Tricia's wonderful meme at Bluff Area Daily. This barn is located just south of Tallahassee. I wish I could have gotten a little closer, but there were "no trespassing" signs everywhere. To see more wonderful old barns, visit Tricia at Old Barns.

Light the Way

 

While walking back to my car after photographing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas building (featured in my weekend blog posts), I noticed that the sun reflecting off of the bronze building was providing a lovely little path through the trees and pine straw.

Florida State Parks

 

A closeup of the Florida State Parks banner near the front door of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas building that I featured on this blog yesterday. This building is the headquarters for the the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. If you look closely or click on the picture and enlarge it, you will catch a glimpse of me and my camera down there in the lower right hand corner.

Weekend Reflections

 

The headquarters for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is located in this building named for Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who was an American journalist, writer, feminist, and environmentalist noted for her role in the protection of the Florida Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. You can read more about Marjory Stoneman Douglas here. This building is located several miles west of downtown Tallahassee and provides some wonderful reflections of the surrounding trees. Trophy Time

 

My grandson finished up his fall soccer season last Saturday and he was really proud of his trophy. He also managed to score his first goal during their last game and he was so proud and excited!

This is a picture of one of the mobile units of the Southeastern Community Blood Center which serves North Florida and South Georgia and is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Tallahassee. With the help of volunteer blood donors, this organization provides blood to patients in over 25 counties in the South Georgia and North Florida region. The center is licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American Association of Blood Banks and the Florida Association of Blood Banks, in addition to being a member of the National Marrow Donor Program, which helps find bone marrow matches for transplant patients.

My other favorite part of the FSU homecoming parade, the Marching Chiefs! My daughter was a member of this band for four years while she was attending FSU.

The Budweiser Clydesdales were participating in the FSU homecoming parade last Friday and this one stopped right in front of me. I think he wanted to make sure he got his picture on my blog!

Seminoles

Chief Osceola and Renegade

 

Last Friday was the annual homecoming parade at Florida State University. Since the parade route is just a 2 block walk from my office and the weather was absolutely gorgeous, I decided to walk over and get some pictures. One of my favorite parts of the parade is Chief Osceola riding his Appaloosa horse, Renegade. Chief Osceola, who is portrayed by an FSU student, and Renegade serve as the official symbol of Florida State University. The University sought and obtained the approval of the Seminole Tribe of Florida for the portrayal of Osceola in 1978 and since that time Osceola, in authentic regalia designed by the ladies of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and Renegade have opened every home football game with the traditional planting of the spear at midfield, appeared in many major bowl games, and performed on national television on numerous occasions. The use of the Seminole name by FSU is fully sanctioned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the University makes every effort to be respectful of their traditions. Members of the Seminole Tribe also participate in the parade and I will show you some pictures of them tomorrow.

Abandoned

This little building used to be where a parking attendant sat guarding a private parking lot near the Florida State University campus. The university built a new 5 story parking garage directly across the street and put this enterprise out of business a few years ago. It looks a little lonely doesn't it? I like the ferns growing out of the roof.

Climbing Tree

Some trees were just made for climbing and this one seems to be kneeling down to make it easier for the kids! My good friend Beth pointed out that there is a heart in the branches of the tree, so I'm entering this picture in Clytie's Guest Heart Thursday over at Random Hearts. Thanks Beth!

Theme Day - Public Transportation

The first day of the month is Theme Day for the City Daily Photo community. This month's theme is Public Transportation. I took this picture of one of the buses used to transport college students, faculty and staff around the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee.
