Watery Wednesday

Geese love this retention pond on the east side of town. In fact, the goose I featured on my Camera Critters post last Sunday hangs around this pond. To see more watery scenes from all over the world, don't miss Watery Wednesday.

The Cake Shop

Posted by Picasa

I have featured The Cake Shop on my blog before when they were in their old location. They recently moved and I'm a little sad about that because now they are even further away from my house. They are still my favorite bakery though. I love their cupcakes!

Downtown

Posted by Picasa

Monroe Street runs right through the heart of downtown Tallahassee. I took this picture of one of the street light banners as I was walking along the sidewalk. By the way, please forgive me for not visiting and commenting on your blogs this week. My grandson and I are enjoying a few days off together. I'll have some pictures of all of our adventures next week!

Camera Critters

I think this goose thought my camera was something to eat and he was a little pushy about getting up into my face about it! To see more fascinating critters from around the world, go visit Camera Critters.

Weekend Reflections

Posted by Picasa

The entrance to the Florida State University College of Medicine. The sky is reflected in the windows above the entrance. After I took this picture, I did a little research on the outdoor terrazzo murals you see by the entrance and found out that they were done by internationally renowned artist Steven Weitzman using his own revolutionary colored concrete process. You can read more details about these stunning murals here. There are actually three murals on that wall, portraits of historic doctors specific to Florida: Hippocrates of Cos, Elizabeth Blackwell and John Gorrie. I was so busy (and overheated!) the day I took this picture that I failed to get a good shot of these murals, so I promise I will go back and get better pictures for a future blog post. Meanwhile, you can click on the picture and enlarge it to get a better view of the murals and the reflections. To see more reflections from around the world, go visit James at Weekend Reflections.

SkyWatch Friday

Summer thunderstorms have started rolling in just about every afternoon. I hate the thunder and lightning that accompany these storms, but they sure do cool us off! This one was moving in as I was getting out of my car to go into the grocery store. To see more SkyWatch pictures from around the world, go visit SkyWatch Friday.

Lobbyists

Since Tallahassee is Florida's state capital, it is not unusual to see organizations like these located downtown and within walking distance of the capitol complex.

Tallahassee Community College

Posted by Picasa

Most of the time when people think of Tallahassee, they think of FSU or FAMU. Tallahassee Community College is also located here and it's a very good school. My son attended TCC for his first two years, before transferring to FSU where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in graphic design. This is a picture of the administration building on the TCC campus.

The Red Elephant

I took this picture while we were waiting for our table at the Red Elephant. We took my grandson there for lunch on his 6th birthday the other day. He loves this place and so do I!

Camera Critters

This little guy was sitting on the side of my house the other day when I got home from work. He had been in the grass which is why he was green when I first saw him. You can tell from the picture he is starting to change his color to brown to camouflage himself while he sits on the brick wall. Vinyl Fever is another local business that has closed due to the economy. They were a great music store and I really miss them. Click on the picture to enlarge it and see all the reflections in their windows and my car. To see more reflections from around the world, go visit James at Weekend Reflections.

ATV Cop

I have seen FSU police officers use SUV's, motorcycles and even bicycles while patroling the Florida State University campus. This is the first time I've seen one on a vehicle like this.

Watery Wednesday

Posted by Picasa

The Heritage Tower is located between the baseball stadium and the football stadium on the Florida State University campus and was a present to FSU from the graduating classes of 1946, 1947, and 1948. These classes represent the transitional time when Florida State College for Women became Florida State University. The GI bill was introduced at the end of World War II. In 1945 men were allowed to attend FSCW to help alleviate overcrowding at other schools. In 1947, they were allowed into the school as full students. That was a good thing for me because that's when my father decided to transfer to FSU from the University of Florida after serving in the Navy during the war. He promptly met my mother, who was starting her first year at FSU and they were married a year later! The dedication of this fountain in 1998 marked the 50th year since FSCW became FSU. The sign outside of Dick Howser Stadium on the Florida State University campus. The FSU baseball team beat Vanderbilt 2 out of 3 games this past weekend to advance to the College World Series in Omaha. The stadium is named after former FSU baseball coach Dick Howser.

Hot

This bank sign is located in downtown Tallahassee and I took the picture this past Saturday afternoon. When I first saw the sign, it was reading 109 degrees (F), but by the time I turned around in traffic and parked my car so I could take a picture, it had cooled down to 107!

Don't Be Ticked

I wish I had paid more attention to this poster when I was walking around some of the wooded areas in Wakulla Springs State Park a couple of weeks ago. I will spare my blog readers the gory details, but I ended up with an infected bite and had to pay a visit to my doctor last week. Click on the picture to enlarge and read all about how to prevent this from happening to you!

Prescribed Fire

Posted by Picasa

In order to protect forests and also people and their homes, land managers sometimes use prescribed fire to reduce hazardous fuel buildups. It is also used for disease control in young pines, improving habitat for wildlife, range management, preservation of endangered plant and animal species and the maintenance of fire dependent ecosystems. You can read much more about prescribed fire on the Florida Division of Forestry website. I took this picture in Wakulla County just south of Tallahassee, but I didn't see any fire going on that day.
