This was the winter home of Alfred B. Maclay and his wife Louise. It is set on a hillside with a sweeping lawn sloping down toward Lake Hall. The house was originally a hunting lodge and was remodeled between 1923-1925. It was painted a burnt sienna color Mrs. Maclay called "Georgia Clay." The Maclays entertained many prominent people here including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The house is furnished much the same as it was when the Maclays lived in it and is now a museum. It is open only during blooming season, January through April.
Thanks everyone for your concern about what used to be Hurricane Ida and now is Tropical Storm Ida. So far, we have just had some rain, but heavy rains and some wind are in the forecast for this afternoon and into tomorrow. My biggest concern is always the trees in my yard and hoping they don't actually fall down on the house! Taking my grandson to school and getting to work this morning was a bit of a challenge, but I made it. Tomorrow is a holiday so no school or work and we are supposed to have a parade for Veteran's Day, but I'm not sure whether it will happen or not. I hope it does happen because my grandson is supposed to march in the parade and carry a flag alongside his mommy's high school marching band and he is really excited about it. Keep your fingers crossed!

Burnt Sienna,eh? That is a very modern sort of colour to be used during the 20s.

If the house had another floor it would look like some of the houses around here. I like the doorway.
I think we had your rain and winds last night. Huge. At least the goats didn't blow away--I worried about them.

Lois - It WILL be clear enough for the parade. It just better for you and your grandson. I think we all got lucky again and let's hope that is IT for this season.
The house really isn't very impressive, is it. But I imagine they lived quite nicely though.

This house is outstanding, please please please, can you come back there in January and tell us about how look inside ( maybe they don't allow pictures inside? ), anyway I would like to know how lovely it is!

It is a simple but elegant house with a very unique history.
I could not believe the high winds we had from Ida. It was all I could do to stand on the beach.
I love how your city has kept its historic houses and turned them into museums. This is a lovely house, and the tall thin tree at the corner sets it off beautifully.
