Poor Paul's

On Thursday I posted a picture of Mike's Beer Barn which is located right across Tennessee Street from the Florida State University campus. Tennessee Street (or US Highway 90) is the main east/west road through Tallahassee. The area of that runs parallel to the FSU campus is also sometimes been called the Tennessee Street "strip" and it is lined with establishments catering to college students. Another one of these places is Poor Paul's Pourhouse. Poor Paul's has been located here for many years, in fact it was there when I was in college many moons ago. It has been a local right of passage for young people to do what is called the "Tennessee Waltz", hitting all the bars along the strip for drinks on their 21st birthday. If you look closely, you will see a couple of birds up there on that sign enjoying the view.

Located right across the street from the Florida State University campus is Mike's Beer Barn. As you have probably guessed, this place has been quite popular with college students for many years, especially the drive-thru feature.

The Silver Slipper restaurant had been an institution in Tallahassee since 1938. For more than half a century it was closely tied to Florida politics. It was a favorite meeting place of governors, legislators, lobbyists and VIP's from around the state. Many famous celebrities dined here while in town, including a young senator named John F. Kennedy. You can read about its long and colorful history here. Sadly the last customer was served earlier this year and it is now closed. A combination of the bad economy and a law enacting a ban on gifts to lawmakers from lobbyists a few years ago did it in.

Railroad Cars

I just couldn't pass by this railroad crossing without stopping to take a picture of these old railroad cars lined up on the tracks. Good thing there was no train coming or I might not have been so brave!

Tallahassee Memorial Hospital is one of two hospitals in Tallahassee and is the oldest and largest. Both of my children were born here as well as both of my grandchildren and I was lucky enough to be in the delivery room for all of them!
