Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
The Bryant Building is typical of many of the older state office buildings located in downtown Tallahassee. This building is the home of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. You can read all about what they do here. They have a whole page on black bears, which I found really interesting, especially the part about what to do when you encounter one. Yikes! Two years ago a 200 pound black bear was spotted up a tree and captured using a tranquilizer on Thomasville Road near downtown Tallahassee.

Funny advice!
Hello dear Lois!
Great shot and cool post!

Lois, I like the bit that goes.. talk to the bear in a normal, calm voice. How many people are going to think of that! Don't get me wrong I would love to encounter a calm photogenic bear.

A lot of important work takes place in that, otherwise, unassuming building.

We've had several black bears near downtown Ocala, too. Rather scary. One they never caught, he just wandered off somewhere!
Oh, re: your comment on Ocala DP - you must be a "true Noll"?
Jacob--I, as well as my parents, my sister, and my kids all graduated from FSU and my daughter was a Marching Chief for 4 years. I have also worked at FSU for the past 32 years, so yes, I guess I am a true Nole! Most of the rest of my family are Gators though and we get along just fine.
Wow! You are truly a "Nole." Glad to hear those gators in your family don't bite!
That's a huge building!! I read the bear encounter page. It's very unlikely that I could refrain from taking a photo if I have a bear encounter! Maybe it's better than I haven't been near one.
Ya gota watch out for them Florida Bears, Lois. We always carry a walkingstick when hiking in the back woods...
We have lots of black and grizzly bears in the mountains. Occasionally one wanders into the city. One year one got into one of our major hospitals...it was roaming around late at night, the automatic doors opened and in it went! Here's a link if you want to read about it!
