Pepper Building

Posted by Picasa

The Claude Pepper Building is another state office building in downtown Tallahassee. It is located next to the capitol complex and you can see the twenty story Florida Capitol building just on the other side of it. When my kids were little they used to call it the "wedding cake" building because they thought it looked like a huge wedding cake.

I was standing right next to the Florida Department of Education building in downtown Tallahassee when I took this picture. I have posted pictures of this building before here and here. Both previous pictures look quite different from this one.

Cow

I'm not sure why this huge cow was standing guard outside of Walmart, but I liked the way he looked, so I took his picture. He was giving me a funny look though. Probably wondering where his picture was going to end up.

Frenchtown Renaissance Center

Posted by Picasa

The Renaissance Center is located in an area close to downtown known as Frenchtown. This area is being revitalized and this center is a major project in that revitalization. You can read more information about it here. I pass this center every day on my way to and from work. I really like the clock tower.

Good Morning

I took this picture behind my church early one morning. The sunlight was coming through those trees and shining on the last little bit of fog that was left before it all burned off.

St. Clement's Chapel

Posted by Picasa

Built in the small town of Lloyd near Tallahassee in 1890, this Episcopal chapel was dedicated as St. Clement's Church on June 14, 1895, by Edwin Gardner Weed, 3rd Bishop of Florida. William Betton of Tallahassee designed and built the structure at a cost of $3,500. The furnishings are the original ones, including the pine pews and reed organ. The Bishop's Chair, oldest in Florida, dates from 1838 and is the only one in existence that the first five Bishops of Florida all used. The chapel was moved to this site near Episcopal Church of the Advent on Piedmont Road in Tallahassee and rededicated on November 29, 1959, by Edward Hamilton West, 5th Bishop of Florida.

Bloxham Building

Posted by Picasa

This state office building is located in downtown Tallahassee. It was built in 1925 as the Caroline Brevard Grammar School. The two story Mediterranean Revival style brick building features a cross-gabled red tile roof, arched windows, and decorative details. Designed by noted southern architect, William A. Edwards, the building was the first consolidated school in Leon County and is the oldest school building in Tallahassee. The building was sold to the state of Florida in 1964, and in 1966 the name of the building was changed to the Bloxham Building in honor of William Dunnington Bloxham, who served as Florida's governor for two terms (1881-1885 and 1897-1901). The building is currently occupied by state of Florida employees from the Department of Revenue and Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Little Graduates!

My grandson graduated from pre-kindergarten on Friday and here he is posing in his cap and gown with a couple of his friends in their sunglasses after the ceremony. My grandson is the one on the left with the heart shaped shades! Cute huh? I thought this picture turned out pretty clear even though I took it with my iPhone.

Cirque Du Soleil

The Cirque Du Soleil show Saltimbanco is in Tallahassee this weekend at the Civic Center. I wish I could say that I was going, but sadly I can't. I have been to the Cirque Du Soleil resident show, La Nouba, at DisneyWorld in Orlando though and it is amazing! My favorite part of La Nouba is the Diabolos (Chinese yo-yo) act.

Gracie has been tagged!

My kitty Gracie has been tagged by her dear friend Luna over at We Love Luna! Luna's blog has pictures of Luna doing all kinds of cute things. Anyway here are the rules: Tag and link back to the person who tagged you. List six (un)important things that make you happy. Tag six bloggers and let them know they're “it”. We all feel this blogging community to be one of inclusion and friendship. Gracie's six (un)important things are:
1. Watch the birds eating from the feeder on the back porch.
2. Sleep.
3. Lick all the leftover milk out of her mommy's cereal bowl when she's done.
4. Take a sunbath.
5. Lie on her back with her paws in the air.
6. Run through the house in the middle of the night like a wild elephant and wake everybody up.

Gracie would like to tag the following bloggers:

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

The Bryant Building is typical of many of the older state office buildings located in downtown Tallahassee. This building is the home of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. You can read all about what they do here. They have a whole page on black bears, which I found really interesting, especially the part about what to do when you encounter one. Yikes! Two years ago a 200 pound black bear was spotted up a tree and captured using a tranquilizer on Thomasville Road near downtown Tallahassee.

Florida Korean War Memorial

Posted by Picasa

Located in Cascade Park near downtown Tallahassee, the Korean War Memorial features a large vertical circle representing the "Circle of Life." The top of the circle is broken, signaling the war's interruption. You can partially see the broken fragment that would complete the circle lying behind it on the left. The names of those killed in action from Florida during the war are etched on the inside of the broken fragment which once completed the circle. Tomorrow I will show you a close-up of the broken fragment. There is a large map of Korea located on the ground of the memorial. The map is divided into two parts by the "Circle of Life". The Demilitarized Zone shown on the map is what guided the placement of the circle. There is also a timeline along the outer edge of the memorial chronicling the Korean War. Along the timeline are rough-hewn markers that give a brief story of the war and its major battles. Markers are placed in relation to the time of the occurrence. This memorial was dedicated on December 11, 1999.
