This house is located right next door to the house I showed yesterday and is the home of the current FSU President. This was as close as I could get to the house since it is a private residence.

Pearl Tyner House

The Pearl Tyner House is located across the street from the Florida State University campus and originally served as the home of the University's president. It is now part of the FSU Alumni Association complex and serves as a welcome center. Pearl Tyner was a graduate of FSU back when it was known as Florida State College for Women and was a generous benefactor of the University.

I saw this food truck parked downtown. I've never tried the chicken & waffles, but I like chicken and I like waffles, so I'll bet it's pretty good. I notice they also have sweet potato fries and I know I like those!

You can only see his legs, but there is a guy up there working on trimming that huge live oak tree near downtown Tallahassee. It was a little windy the day I took this picture, so he was having to wrestle with the Spanish moss while he was trying to work.

I caught a seagull admiring this view of the Chicago skyline when I took his picture in front of the Adler Planetarium. I was just trying to stay warm! For some reason every time I have visited the windy city, it has been in the wintertime. One day I'm going to go back when the weather is warm enough not to have to bundle up in layers of clothes just to go outside. This concludes pictures of my trip. Harry Caray's

The first night we were in Chicago, my daughter and I ate at Harry Caray's and both the food and service were fantastic. Here are a couple of shots I took inside the restaurant when we were leaving. The cow in the second shot is a tribute to Harry Caray's famous exclamation "Holy Cow!" which, according to his autobiography, he trained himself to use in order to avoid any chance of using profanity on the air while broadcasting baseball games. Route 66 begins here

I didn't notice this sign marking the beginning of the famous Route 66 until a homeless man pointed it out as a photo op. Of course I thanked him by giving him a "donation". You can see the Willis (formerly known as the Sears) Tower peeking out from behind the street lamp. This sign is located just off of Michigan Avenue on Adams Street in Chicago.

Public Art

"Agora" by Magdalena Abakanowicz is located in Grant Park at the corner of Michigan and Roosevelt. It consists of 106 headless and armless cast iron figures created in Poland at the Srem Foundry. Each figure is 9 feet tall and weighs 1100 pounds. You can read more about this public art in Chicago here.

I thought the sky looked pretty reflected in the Cloud Gate sculpture, commonly called "the Bean", in Millennium Park in Chicago. I'm one of the tiny little people in the reflection way back there taking the picture. I also like the way that building behind it kind of sneaked into the reflection at the top. I took this picture of the Marina City towers in Chicago while I was standing on one of the bridges crossing the Chicago River. I liked the way the apartments were decorated for Christmas. These towers always remind me of the old Bob Newhart TV show from the 70's, since they were featured in the show's opening sequence.

I took this picture of Lake Michigan while I was standing behind the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. It was a very cold and windy day and looked like we were about to get some snow. This giant sculpture by Seward Johnson is based on the famous photo of Marilyn Monroe by Bernard of Hollywood and is located right next to the Chicago Tribune tower on Michigan Avenue. I had to be patient to get these shots because there were so many guys posing underneath her and looking up while having their pictures taken.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was spending part of my time off in Chicago and this week I thought it would be fun to show some pictures from my trip. This is the Puppet Bike and I was lucky enough to catch a performance on State Street right near my hotel. There was quite a crowd gathered, so I had to wait my turn for a picture. I was getting ready to wash some dishes after dinner one night last week and I found this baby anole sitting behind my sink. It took me awhile to catch it, but I finally did and set it free outside my back door. If you look closely in the chrome of the faucet handle, you can see my reflection as I took his picture. This egret was hanging out at Lake Ella while my grandson and I were feeding bread to the ducks. We thought he was eating the bread too, but then we noticed he was much smarter than that. He was waiting for the tiny fish in the lake to feed on the bread and then snatching them up for his lunch. I really tried to get a shot of him eating a fish, but he was too quick!

Dry Cypress Swamp

Earlier this week I mentioned that we have had a severe lack of rain this year and you can tell that is true by looking at these cypress trees. If you look at their trunks, you can see where the waterline usually is. We actually got a few days of rain this week, but it will take quite a bit more to bring this swamp back to normal.

This big gator was taking a nap right under the elevated walkway through the swampy area of the Tallahassee Museum. Due to the lack of rain we have had this year, this area is not under water like it usually is. That is my shadow standing over the alligator in the first picture. Old City Cemetery is surrounded by an iron fence. I like the way the Spanish moss drapes itself over the fence. Parts of the cemetery are higher than others and in the second shot you can see how the graves are at eye level as you walk down the sidewalk on the south side of the cemetery.

Confederate graves and some kind of little stump creature

This section of Old City Cemetery is devoted to Confederate soldiers. There is a section for Union soldiers which looks very similar to this on the other side of the cemetery. I guess they didn't want to bury them too close together! In the lower left corner of the first picture, you can see the pruned stump of a little tree. The second picture is a closeup of the same stump from a different angle. It looks like a little animal with a horn, an eye, and even a sly little smile on its face to me. Click on it to enlarge and tell me if I'm imagining things!

More Old City Cemetery

I took all of these pictures near the east entrance of Old City Cemetery after I saw the "no trespassing" warning sign posted by the Tallahassee Police Department. It's probably due to vandalism, which is a shame. I think it is interesting the way some of the family plots are fenced and even have gates as you can see in the second shot. In the third picture, it looks like someone tried to slide the stone covering right off of one of the graves. This place would be really spooky at night! Old City Cemetery

Old City Cemetery is the oldest public cemetery in Tallahassee. It was established in 1829 and is located near downtown and right across the street from where I work. It contains graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers, victims of the yellow fever epidemic of 1841, and some notable figures in Tallahassee history. I recently took a walk around the cemetery and this week I will be showing a few pictures from that day.

The Greyhound Bus Station has been at this location for as long as I can remember. In fact, when I was a college student (back in the olden days) and couldn't find a ride home with one of my friends, I used to ride the bus from Tallahassee to Jacksonville. It took forever though because the bus took the scenic route instead of the interstate and stopped in every little town along the way.

Leader of the Band

FSU played a home football game last Saturday and one of the things I like to do on game days is attend the Marching Chiefs warmup session just before they march into the stadium. Here you can see the head drum major on the podium conducting the band, while the two assistant drum majors stand on either side of him. He was conducting a beautiful version of the Battle Hymn of the Republic which was part of their halftime show honoring the victims of 9/11. The Marching Chiefs is the largest college marching band in the world with membership comprised from almost every academic department within the University. My daughter and son-in-law were both members of the Marching Chiefs while they were undergraduate students at FSU.

Interesting Proposal

The plaza that surrounds the Westcott fountain on the FSU campus is paved with commemorative bricks inscribed with the names of FSU alumni, friends and family. I noticed this particular brick while taking a lunch time walk. It looks like a new addition to the plaza. If you are having trouble reading it, just click on the picture to enlarge. Remembering 9/11

Today is the 10th anniversary of one of the worst days in the history of the United States. I'm posting this picture of our beautiful flag to honor all who were lost on that terrible day. The second two pictures are from a visit to New York City that I took with my kids in December 1991, ten years before the attacks. The middle shot shows a much younger me on the ferry going from Liberty Island back to Battery Park with the twin towers behind me. On that day, we rode the elevator all the way to the top of Tower 2 in the World Trade Center. The third shot is of me standing in front of a window at the top of Tower 2 with a view of the city behind me. You can see part of Tower 1 through the window on the left side of the picture. That is my daughter in the red jacket sitting on the floor in front of me. I still have the souvenir t-shirt that I bought at the gift shop up there. Please forgive the quality of these pictures (and the fashion!), as they were taken with a 35mm film camera and they are 20 years old!

I work on the beautiful campus of Florida State University, but rarely am I there at night. Last week we had a faculty and staff fall meeting in the evening at the newly renovated William Johnston Building where 3 of the departments in the college where I work are located. This is a picture of the main entrance.

Internet cafes are causing quite a bit of controversy in the state of Florida. Customers buy internet time bundled with casino-style sweepstakes and critics say it is a legal form of gambling, but without the benefits of fees or taxes because the cafes are largely unregulated. They seem to be popping up everywhere and their parking lots are always full of cars.

Holland Building

A picture of one of the more generic state office buildings downtown. This building was named in honor of Spessard L. Holland, who served as governor of Florida from 1941 to 1945 and was later elected to the U. S. Senate in 1946. He was only the second former governor of Florida to be elected to the Senate and the first Florida native to serve as both Governor and Senator.

The Wharf Express is not too far from my house and they serve fresh delicious seafood without too much of a wait. Their fried pickles are pretty good too and the staff is very friendly! Another display in the Florida Historic Capitol Museum is about Florida's role in the notorious 2000 United States Presidential election. The second picture shows a ballot box from Palm Beach County, home of the infamous "butterfly ballot".

Continuing my tour of the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, one of the exhibits shows this "White Ladies" restroom door used in the old Whitfield Building, which housed the state Supreme Court until 1949. Jim Crow, or segregation laws, applied to almost every public activity. African Americans used "Colored Only" facilities. The second picture shows a closeup of the sign explaining segregation laws passed by Southern states after Reconstruction. Since I had a hard time not getting too many reflections in the glass protecting the exhibits (including a self portrait in the second shot), I decided to go ahead and make this part of Weekend Reflections.

House of Representatives

The restored 1902 House of Representatives chamber in the old Florida Capitol looks very much like the Senate chamber I showed yesterday, so I decided to show a few different shots with more detail. The first picture shows a reproduction of one of the 68 desks used by the Representatives. In the second shot you can see the original Speaker's bench in the front of the chamber. The third picture shows an original old Capitol steam radiator. Before 1903, heat for the Capitol was provided by 24 brick fireplaces, four of them in the House of Representatives chamber. A complete new steam heating system was ordered during the expansion of the building in 1902 and was in place when the first Legislative session began in 1903. The House received 12 radiators like this one.

Senate Chamber

The restored 1902 Senate Chamber in the old Florida Capitol is furnished with 32 reproduction oak desks and Senate President's bench. In 1902, an original desk and chair would have cost a total of $27.50. In the 1990's, when the desks and chairs were reproduced, they cost $750 apiece.

Supreme Court

Before relocating to their own building, the Supreme Court of Florida met from 1903 until 1913 in this Chamber located in the old Florida Capitol. The restored Chamber includes many original furnishings, one of which is the twenty-four foot long Supreme Court bench shown in the first picture. It was made of golden oak at a cost of $350 in 1902. Using original furniture, this room was restored based on a 1911 photograph. The current Supreme Court of Florida is housed in a separate building right across the street from the new Capitol and I previously posted a picture of it here.

Dome and Stairs

Continuing the tour I started yesterday, the first picture shows the beautiful stained glass domed ceiling over the rotunda inside Florida's old Capitol. The second two pictures are of the staircase directly under that dome. I took the first shot while leaning over the 2nd floor railing surrounding those stairs and trying very hard not to drop my camera in the process! Florida Historic Capitol Museum

Recently I spent an afternoon exploring the Florida's old Capitol in downtown Tallahassee and for the next few days I am going to take you on a tour of this lovely old building. One of the first things anyone notices from the outside are the red and white striped awnings on the windows. Most people either love them or hate them and I admit I wasn't too fond of them when they first appeared after the building was restored, but now they have kind of grown on me. The old state Capitol has been standing on this same site since 1845, but it underwent many changes through the years, until the newer 20 story building which you can see standing behind it was completed in 1977. From 1978-1982, the old Capitol was restored to its 1902 appearance and those awnings are authentic to that period. This intensive project of historical, architectural and archaeological investigation made Florida’s Capitol one of the most thoroughly documented capitol restoration projects in the nation. I would love to hear your opinion of those awnings. Love them or hate them?

The Warehouse

Just up the street from the place in yesterday's post. As its name implies, it is located in an old warehouse not far from the FSU campus and is quite popular with college students.

I spotted this sign while driving past the old warehouses on Gaines Street and just had to go back for a picture. You can visit their website here. Looks like they put on quite a show around Halloween!

More Pinetta

Here is a farewell shot from my cousin's place in Pinetta. This is another one of his driftwood planters with a birdhouse underneath. You can see his pond in the background. The latest visitor to the pond was a young alligator, but he's not there anymore. One of the ways they check for gators in the pond is by shining a light out there at night. You can tell if there are gators because the light will reflect in their eyes. They let their grandchildren swim in the pond, so they are pretty careful about checking it.

I had not planned to show any more pictures of my cousin's backyard in Pinetta, but since they have been such a hit on my blog, I think I'll show a few more. This is where they keep their chickens. Weekend Reflections

Antique glass bottles on display at Florida's historic old Capitol building. These bottles were found by archeologists in the 1970's when the foundation for the new capitol was excavated. You can see the reflection of one of the front windows and its red and white striped awning in the glass along with a passing car on Monroe Street outside. One of my cousins in Pinetta has retired and now he spends his days making these beautiful birdhouses out of driftwood. Aren't they gorgeous?

Watery Wednesday

This beautiful little pond is located in the backyard of my cousin. She and her husband (and many more of my relatives) live near the tiny town of Pinetta, which is about 60 miles east of Tallahassee. That is a big piece of driftwood there in the foreground and yes, alligators have been known to frequent their pond. To see more lovely watery pictures, don't miss Watery Wednesday.
