Sea Lions at Pier 39

My grandkids and I really enjoyed seeing the sea lions at Pier 39 in San Francisco. They are fun to watch, especially when they are playing, barking, or just swimming around in the water. As you can see from my photos, most of them just lay there basking in the sun and napping. I took the first two photos by zooming in on them from a walkway on the west side of the sea lion docks and the second two photos were taken on a different day from the east side of the docks. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge and part of the Bay in the distance in the third photo. The first sea lions showed up at this location after the 1989 earthquake hit San Francisco and before long they began to arrive in droves and just stayed. Protected from predators and with a good supply of food from the Bay, they have been here ever since and have become a big tourist attraction.  If you want the hear them barking, check out my short video below:

Oh how lovely, the intersection of wild life with humanity! I suddenly thought of how they can dive below the water into an immense territory where we just live on the surface or around the edges.

Hello, the sea lions are a fun sight to see. I am glad they are protected in that area, they do attract a lot of tourists. I saw them years ago too. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

How fantastic Lois, that's an amazing sight! I can almost hear the noises they make ☺ I can see how they would be a tourist draw-card!

We saw a ton of these cool critters on a visit to Monterey...as I recall they were great fun and like trees, had a lot of "bark." Another series of excellent shots, full of interest and tack sharp!

Awesome photos, info and video. We so wanted to see some sea lions when we went on our cruise, and were delighted when we did! Fascinating critters!

We stayed in a hotel in Astoria, Oregon, near the mouth of the Columbia River. There were nearly this many sea lions on a wharf nearby and they barked all night. Not to be contrary, while tourists enjoy them commercial fishermen hate them as they hearty eaters and are in competition for fish -- and the fishery isn't as strong as it once was. They can wear out their welcome.

I visited in 1996 and took some lovely photos. It's good to see they are still there and protected.

It still looks the same as when I was there in 1992. They are fun to watch and they love to squeal. Nice photos and video, Lois.

I about fell off my chair when I saw that picture, since I'm so behind and didn't realize you were traveling. Sure looks more like the west coast (of the US) not Florida I thought! And sure enough. What a great trip with your grands.

We have a 'sea lion dock' in Oregon (Newport) and they're a real tourist attraction there as well.
