Hohensalzburg Fortress

You can see the railway tracks going up to the fortress just on the other side of St. Peter's Abbey. That is a statue of St. Peter in the foreground.

The first of many amazing views of the city of Salzburg from the fortress.

View of the Alps in the distance.

Inner courtyard and St. George's Chapel.

After lunch, my daughter and I took the less than one minute ride on the Festungsbahn funicular railway up to Hohensalzburg, the beautiful fortress the overlooks the city of Salzburg. The views were spectacular. Construction of the fortress began in 1077 and over the centuries, what began as a small castle grew into the huge fortress we see today.

Wow, these are some of your very best pictures of all! This is such an amazing place to visit, so glad you took us along! I love picture #2!!--looks like a postcard. And the last picture is so cool too, but I do love the one standing and looking up at that tall stone tower. Do you do things with your pictures, like enlarge/frame and display any of them in your home to remind you of your travels?--or maybe make photo books?

Would have been neat to see it in its prime

The fortress feels imposing and enduring. Wonderful shots, especially with the mountains.

Dear Lois, just when I think your photos couldn't get any better, you challenge that assumption with a post like this. Technically, your photos are superb. But the key is your ability to "see" the shot, and frame it to exclude the unnecessary and highlight the essential! In this case, as in your other photos, you have made the subject so enticing that I get to itching to go there! That will never happen, but at least I have these pictures to give me some idea of what these cities and countries look like! Merci!

that fort is almost as old as ME, lol... I love the view looking down the barrel of the cannon. I think this is my most favorite of all your trip photos. the way the buildings are stacked up and the views looking down or up or through are just amazing. like in the first photo, I can see several levels in one pick and they are awesome
