Looking down from the top level of one of the parking garages on the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee. The pole with the blue light on top is part of the "Blue Light Trail" which consists of over 400 strategically placed light poles all over campus equipped with emergency speaker phones and topped with strobe lights. If you are threatened, see anything suspicious or require any type of police assistance quickly, you can just push the emergency button to be connected immediately with an FSU Police dispatcher.

Great shot Lois. I like the idea behind these 'Blue Light' poles. Anything to make a campus more secure. Let's hope they're never needed.

Great angle! It must be reassuring to hace help close-by :-)

What a shame. That they have to have so many places for people in trouble to use to call for help. Whatever happened to our world?

I like distress poles, good idea.

Great shot, but I have vertigo and it's making me dizzy :) The blue light posts are such a great idea. Of course, there would never be anything suspicious going on on a college campus lol. Kat

That's a high building you are while taking the photo. That's a nice photo. Where is that guy going?

Lois said...

Siromade--that guy is probably walking to class.

Kat--Two words: Ted Bundy, the notorious serial killer, committed 2 of his final murders on the FSU campus and even though it was over 30 years ago, most people around here will never forget that!

That was a very good idea to install something like that on campus, it would make me feel safer! I have no idea what something like that cost to install & maintain, but something on a smaller scale could be invented for cities.

Very cool. The arrow in the street is pointing right at the unsuspecting guy walking on the sidewalk, thought it was cute!

I might just be silly but (well, I am), if you view the guy from the top, does it mean he is down under???

Very nicely composed shot, Lois!

I noticed the 'emergency' pole when I first looked at your picture. What a wonderful and reassuring idea!

Those poles are a really great idea. Now that I read what you wrote about Ted Bundy, I can see even more the reason behind them, but I think all campuses should implement them.

I like the perspective of this picture.

That is a wonderful idea for the safety of all on the huge campus. The police know the exact location of the trouble.

I went to college in an urban area 40 years ago and the college installed similar emergency phones all over campus. I am surprised that a traditional campus like FSU should have a need for them, but it is reassuring for students and, especially, their parents, I am sure.

Great angle! The emergency poles would be a good idea in other locations too.

Ted Bundy was such a charmer, none of his victims would have even thought about reaching for an emergency phone. I never felt safer with emergency phones on my college campus (Michigan State University). They're a good idea...but, I think they invoke a false sense of security with young students who are already prone to taking risks (ie: walking alone across campus at night).

I don't know much about a campus. We don't have theme here. Students live in cities on their own, or special apartments. But I like the photo from birdsview,

That seems a good idea, I hope they don't need it too often...

A very well composed photo. It's too bad such things are necessary but it's better sometimes being safe than sorry.

That is a wonderful idea for a college campus. Bundy was from the Pacific Northwest--he, they think, is responsible for the disappearance of a young woman from my high school, when I was just a freshman.

UC Berkeley has these as does the local community college where Mme la Vache is taking some classes. Good idea.

You chose a really good angle for a good subject.
