Mastadon at the Museum of Florida History

Posted by Picasa

Last week I visited the Museum of Florida History in downtown Tallahassee. The museum opened in 1977 with an emphasis on collecting and preserving evidence of the past and present cultures in our state, while promoting knowledge and an appreciation of our heritage by focusing on artifacts and eras unique to Florida's development and on roles that Floridians have played in national and global events. It is a popular destination for school children on field trips and tourists visiting the state Captitol. I will be featuring some pictures from the museum this week and I'm starting off with a picture of the eleven foot tall fully restored mastodon skeleton that greets you as you walk into the museum. It was recovered from Wakulla Springs, which is located just south of Tallahassee.

That's fascinating, Lois. "They" also found an entire mastodon skeleton at Silver Springs some years ago!

Those things must have ruled the earth.

An excellent photograph!

Very nice. I graduated from Leon High in the mid-sixties and that certainly wasn't there when I was. Thanks for sharing.
