Deep Fried Oreos

Posted by Picasa

This past weekend I went to the Pumpkin Festival in downtown Havana, Florida. Havana is a beautiful little town located just north of Tallahassee. This festival is billed as their signature event. While strolling around the festival with my kids and grandkids, I noticed this food vendor and immediately focused on that little sign up there in the middle of the picture. Deep fried oreos? I've lived in the South all my life and am used to eating anything battered and deep fried because it usually is just better that way. Not better for you, but better tasting. But Oreos? How can you improve Oreos, other than dunking them in milk? Despite the hefty pricetag for these little delicacies ($5 for 6), I decided I had to try them. Besides the guy who was selling them told me that they were "slap your mama good"! With a recommendation like that, it was a done deal. After he battered them up and dropped them in the hot grease, he let me take a picture of my Oreos getting deep fried. After they came out of the frier, he dusted them with powdered sugar and the third picture shows the finished product. While they were cooling, I took their portrait. The final verdict--yes they were good! They were delicious, and in fact they were definitely "slap your mama" good and more. By the way, this also works for dill pickle slices, although you don't dust them with the powdered sugar.

THis probably ranks on the culinary scale with deep-fried Mars Bars!

What is a funnel cake?

I'm a 'anything deep fried is good guy'. I always seem to be wearing a dark shirt though and end up with powdered sugar all over me.

Dill pickles are awesome along with jalapeno chips.

Aw, you born-and-bred southerners do know how to cook stuff so it tastes good. I've never heard of deep fried oreos, and can't imagine such a thing, but I'd be willing to give it a try.

These small town festivals are so much fun!.

Mouth-watering photos, Lois!

Beth--that's what I said about the fried pickles at first, but then I tried them and they are so good I can't even describe it.
Julie--funnel cake is deep fried cake batter sprinkled with powered sugar. It's really good too!
Darla--I had frost on my roof this morning! Yay!

No matter how good you say they are, I think I'll stick to plain old Sunshine Hydrox, which are better than regular Oreos. But have you tried the new mint Oreos? They are to die for; and if you eat too many you probably will:)

This is something that I have wanted to try for a long time.
I envy you Lois. :)

Odd how almost anything deep fried is edible and nobody seems to care as long as it is fried in peanut oil or some such. Nice photos.

hahahaha....good bloke to let you take the photos as well. You did a good job too convincing him of a free advertisement in the blogosphere.

Who invented fries? I'll try that one day.

I used to like deep-fried stuff but I just cringe when I read about such stuff these days - I'm with Small City Scenes on this one.

They fry Oreos here at The Sweet Life. They are really good, but I sure don't want to know how many grams of fat they have! An Oreo is bad enough on it's own!
